LYNCHBURG, Va. – Longwood outdoor track continued its strong start to the spring with a good showing at the Dr. Jack M. Tom's Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Lynchburg.
The Lancers set 31 personal bests on the day, and many other runners had strong times in the team's second outdoor meet of the season.
Sophie Farley won the women's 1,500 meter invitational as well as the women's 800 meters race.
Ayden Stewart, meanwhile, finished in the top three in the men's 400 meter race, and
Andrew Hathaway was second in the men's 1,500 meter open race with a personal best time. In addition,
Christian Reid won the men's 5,000 meter open race.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Farley won the 1,500m invitational race on Friday night, and she was only two seconds off the program record, which she holds. She won the race by five seconds.
She also ripped off a 2:14.16, one second off her personal best, to win the women's 800 meter race by five seconds.
Sam Bolen, with a 2:21.26, set a personal best in the same race.
On the men's side, Stewart's 48.97 broke his personal best that was also the program record by half a second, and it allowed him to finish third in the 28-runner field. He won his heat.
In the women's 400m, both Liliana Arevalo and
Mayson Jenkins cracked the one-minute mark, with Arevalo's 59.34 setting the program record and Jenkins' time of 59.84 the second-fastest. They finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the event.
Tristan Duplissey's time of 57.92 in the men's 400 meter hurdles cut nearly three seconds off of his previous mark as a Lancer. He finished seventh in the race.
Christ smith was only .27 from breaking the program record, which he holds, in the men's 800 meter race, and he finished 13
th out of 65 runners.
Hathaway was second in the men's 1,500 meter open race with a 4:03.23, and
Clinton Clancy finished fifth with a 4:05.63. Both times were personal bests.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Another great weekend at the track," said Longwood Head Coach
Brooke Craig. "We're hitting faster times than we were last year across the board, and it is only the second meet. There is still work to do, but we're where we should be at this point."
"This was a huge day for the entire team and they should be feeling confident," said Longwood Assistant Coach
Rob Gritzer. "The results of all the hard work they've put in since last summer are paying off and it's a fun time to be a Lancer! Next week should be another good outing where we establish and break multiple relay records across the board at the Colonial Relays."
