FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer picked up some big hardware in the Big South Conference postseason awards which were released by the conference office today.
Sam Fischer was voted the Big South Freshman of the Year by the coaches, and
Sara Curtis was selected as the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league sports information directors.
In addition, Fischer and
Sydney Robertson garnered First Team All-Big South honors, and Curtis and
Meghan Piazza earned spots on the Big South Second Team. Fischer also was selected to the Big South All-Freshman Team while Curtis was a member of the All-Academic Team.
Fischer proved a dynamic force at the top of Longwood's formation and led the Lancers with seven goals, which tied for second-most in the Big South. Her 16 points led Longwood, as she added two assists to her goal tally. In addition, Fischer scored three game winners and helped lead Longwood to a third-place finish in the league standings, the highest finish since 2021 when the team finished third. She is the first Freshman of the Year for the Lancers since Carrie Reaver earned the honor in 2017.
Robertson, meanwhile, was part of a stout Lancer back line that grew stingier throughout conference play. The senior helped Longwood surrender less than one goal per game, and the team's 0.75 goals against average was second in the Big South. She is the first Lancer center back to earn multiple first team honors since Sidney Wallace did so three times from 2016-18.
Curtis, who holds a perfect GPA as a student-athlete at Longwood while pursuing her Master's in Business Administration, was one of the top goalkeepers in the league this season. She led the conference with a 1.069 goals against average this season and also led the league with six shutouts. The graduate student got better in conference play, posting a 0.75 goals against average. In addition, her save percentage went up to .813 in league action. She is the first women's soccer player to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year from the Big South since Reaver won it in both 2019 and the 2021 spring season.
Piazza, who was listed as one of the top returners in the Big South prior to the 2025 campaign, cemented her place as a creative hub up front for Longwood. She was second on the team with four goals while starting all 17 matches, and she added an assist. In addition, she played more than 1,000 minutes from an attacking position.
The Lancers are the No. 3 seed in the Big South playoffs, a feat they have achieved six times now under Head Coach
Todd Dyer in 14 years in the league.
Longwood
