FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey battled to the bitter end, but the Lancers (4-11, 2-6 MAC) rally in the fourth quarter came up short in a 5-3 loss to Central Michigan.
Â
The Chippewas (8-7, 3-5 MAC) used three goals from Carolena Ryon to edge the Lancers, despite Longwood outcornering CMU 14-5.
Â
Prior to the game, the team wore Dream Crazy Forever shirts for the
Dream Crazy Foundation in honor of field hockey coach Gretta Ehret. The Dream Crazy Foundation was founded to honor Ehret's legacy and to raise awareness for breast cancer and, most importantly, to provide scholarships that open the door for underserved youth to experience the transformative power of sports.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The two sides traded shots and chances throughout the contest in a high-octane game that featured 47 shots, eight goals and 22 saves between the two teams.
Â
Central Michigan struck first on a Mallory Camryn goal less than three minutes in, but Longwood had an answer.
Â
Madison Wiley banged home her third goal of the season with a tick more than five minutes to play in the first to tie the score at one.
Â
Sophie Mooldijk, Longwood's goalkeeper, helped it stay even at one with five first-quarter saves, and she finished with 11 on the night.
Â
However, Ryon put CMU up 2-1 early in the second period, and the Chippewas added goals from Ryon and Camryn in the third to make it 4-1. Ryon capped her hat trick in the fourth.
Â
Longwood started to rally late and created a variety of chances. Tierney powered home her fourth goal of the season to trim it to 5-2, and
Channy Johnson redirected one home with less than a minute to play to cut it to 5-3.
Â
Ultimately though, CMU's back line was able to escape thanks to 11 saves from Ashely Cogger.
