FARMVILLE, Va. – The annual matchup between Longwood and Liberty field hockey went to the Flames (14-2) on Sunday afternoon.

Liberty's high-powered offense pulled away to win 7-1 despite a game effort from the Lancers (4-12) that saw Longwood open well.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood was the side that created the early advantages behind a strong opening sequence from the first push.

The Lancers moved up the field and created a pair of penalty corners in the opening minutes and registered the first few shots of the match, but the Liberty back line fended off the chances.

However, Liberty found its footing and struck with back-to-back penalty corner goals from Morena Giacosa and Julieta Tornati in the sixth and seventh minute, respectively. Avery Pollock added one more in the waning seconds of the first quarter.

That lead allowed Liberty to comfortably finish out the half, with the Flames taking a 4-0 lead into halftime after Giacosa's second goal of the contest.

Channy Johnson muscled in a goal for Longwood early in the third period to get Longwood on the board. The junior batted in her eighth goal of the season off a rebound from a Maria Papas shot.

Liberty answered back though to put the game to rest.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • Sophie Mooldijk made 11 saves in goal for the Lancers
  • Diane Saint Martin made four saves for Liberty in goal
