Hungry Lancers Down Ohio 2-1

Carraway, Wiley Tally Goals in Tight Longwood Road Win

ATHENS, Ohio – Madison Wiley came up big in the fourth quarter for Longwood field hockey on Sunday.

The senior sent home the game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 win for the Lancers (4-10, 2-5 MAC) at Ohio (5-10, 3-4 MAC) at Pruitt Field.

Wiley's fourth-quarter goal gave Longwood its second conference win to cap another strong defensive effort. Sophie Mooldijk made 13 saves, including a penalty stroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lancers and Bobcats (5-10, 3-4 MAC) went back and forth throughout the midfield in the first quarter, trading scoring opportunities. As the clock hit zero, the Lancers were awarded a penalty corner.

Ohio goalkeeper Ash Stephenson saved Longwood's initial shot, but Caitlin Carraway calmly collected the rebound at the top of the shooting circle and blasted it home for a 1-0 lead going into the second. It was Carraway's first collegiate goal.

Ohio's Tiana Nhamoinesu managed to tie the score at one apiece in the second quarter, but the Lancer back line kept it there. Mooldijk stymied two penalty corner attempts in addition to a penalty stroke to keep the score level at one.

The Lancers continued to play a strong defense, turning aside Ohio penalty corners and scoring attempts. A yellow card on Ohio at the last second left Longwood woman up going into the fourth and final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Molly Rothenberger bobbed and weaved through three defenders and found Wiley right in front of the goal. Wiley then banged it home for a 2-1 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter, and the Lancer back line, along with Mooldijk in the cage, made it stick. Mooldijk made four saves in the final 15 minutes.

Mooldijk earned her fourth win of the season in goal and now has 139 saves this season while Stephenson took the loss.
