HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
After a two-hour rain delay, Kent State controlled early., and Usoz gave them the lead in the sixth minute with a big individual effort. She dribbled inside the 12 and weaved in front of the goal before slipping a shot home.
Â
Longwood responded though, driving forward and putting a lot of pressure on the goal.
Â
Finally, the team earned a penalty corner, and Johnson played it to the top of the 12.
Ireland McDermott pinged it right to the post, where Johnson coolly deflected it home to even the score at one in the 11
th minute.
Â
Early in the second quarter, Usoz again delivered in the run of play. This time, she fired home a reverse for her second goal of the match and a 2-1 lead.
Â
Again, Longwood upped its energy, but this time the final touch was elusive before halftime. The Lancers fired four of their eight shots, with three on cage, but the Kent State back line stood firm.
Â
After halftime, the match was a slog, with the two teams trading possession in the midfield.
Â
In the fourth, Longwood again applied heavy pressure, but this time Usoz came up with a defensive save on a deflected shot from McDermott to preserve the lead.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Tough pill to swallow today," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "Kent State is a good team who likes to play fast and physical. Unfortunately, we allowed a few too many shots and got behind. There was lots of improvement from last weekend as we are looking forward to tightening up as a group and having another go for conference play on Sunday."
Â
UP NEXT:
