FARMVILLE, Va. – An even hockey match went back and forth through regulation, overtime, and then double overtime between Longwood and Ohio on Sunday afternoon.

Ultimately, the two sides were deadlocked 1-1, but Ohio (4-5, 1-1 MAC) won a shootout 3-2 to narrowly edge the Lancers (3-5, 1-2 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood came out and dominated the opening quarter, controlling possession and creating chances. The Lancers didn't allow a shot while generating five of their own.

In the fourth minute, Longwood earned back-to-back corners. On the second, Zoe Tierney put a shot toward the cage that Jane Ramsay deflected into the goalkeeper. On the rebound, Ramsay pounded it home for a 1-0 lead.

Ohio found its footing and eventually pressured its way to multiple corners in the third quarter. Noa Desmaretz deflected home a shot from Meela Kopp to tie the score at one.

The game turned choppy from that point on, with a total of two shots in the fourth quarter.

The field opened slightly in overtime, but, again, the back lines for both sides made things difficult. Ohio had six shots in the extra periods while Longwood had three, with both teams narrowly missing on good chances to score.

Fittingly, in a match as even as this, it came down to the final shooter of five for the shootout. Caitlin Carraway and Madison Wiley had made their attempts for Longwood, and Emily Risser and Sophie Van Der Wal both slotted home attempts for Ohio. Anouk Plaehn then barely put the deciding goal home, just getting it past a diving attempt from Longwood's Sophie Mooldijk that deflected the ball but couldn't push it away.

UP NEXT:

Longwood returns to the pitch next weekend with a trip to Ball State on Friday, October 4. First push is set for noon.
