MUNCIE, Ind. – Longwood field hockey battled but fell 3-1 on the road at MAC foe Ball State on Friday afternoon.

Ireland McDermott had a fourth-quarter goal for the Lancers (3-6 ,1-3 MAC), but a trio of goal scorers did the damage for Ball State (2-7, 1-2 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Ball State struck first on a penalty stroke in the first quarter. Emma Van Hal slotted it home in the sixth minute.

Julia Verrati added a second in the quarter when she put home a rebound on a penalty corner late.
Â
Longwood put a pair of shots forward in the second quarter, but Ball State extended the lead to 3-0 on Jenna Wyckoff's goal in the third.

McDermott grabbed one back in the fourth quarter for the Lancers. Longwood earned a penalty corner, and McDermott tipped home a shot from
Kinsey Waddell, with
Hunter-Paige Johnson also earning an assist on the play.

The Lancers had two more shots in the final few minutes, but the final touch refused to go in.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"It was an unfortunate outcome for the group today," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "We didn't show up and play our game the way we know how to. We are capable of playing good hockey and beating good teams. I've seen us do it before. We need to reset as a group and find a way."
