HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The match was about as even as possible between two teams that refused to back down.
Â
Defenses reigned supreme in the first period, with the two offenses limited to one total shot.
Â
Both sides started to find their footing offensively in the second period, and La Salle struck first on a penalty corner right before the half. Sofia Pla slotted home her third goal of the season.
Â
The Lancers kept after it and finally found paydirt in the third with a little grit. After seeing multiple chances turned aside on a corner,
Jane Ramsay banged home her own rebound to tie the match at one.
Â
La Salle bounced back right away, scoring less than two minutes later when Zhao Rodrigo finished off a counterattack off a feed from Pla.
Â
However, Longwood again refused to quit. After pulling their goalkeeper, the Lancers exerted heavy pressure in the closing minutes. Eventually, the Lancers forced multiple saves on a penalty corner, and Ramsay and
Ireland McDermott had shots. Ultimately, a penalty stroke was called in the scramble, and Tierney coolly hit it home to knot the score at 2-2 with 2:02 to play.
Â
In overtime though, La Salle earned a corner, and Malena Balduzzi and Pla combined for a goal on a give-and-go. Balduzzi played it home for her first goal of the season and a 3-2 win.
Â
Both goalkeepers made big plays in the match to keep it tight, with
Sophie Mooldijk making seven saves for the Lancers while Abby Boggs made seven in the cage for La Salle.
