RICHMOND, Va. - The Longwood University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Virginia Commonwealth University of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday night in Richmond. Junior
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) scored his first goal of the season to tie the game in the 73rd minute. The Lancers (1-3-2) return to action on Wednesday, September 23, when they travel to Fairfax to take on George Mason University at 7 p.m..
Longwood was the aggressor early, taking three shots in the first half while holding VCU (3-1-1) without a shot. Freshman
Devin Pierce/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) had two shots on goal in the opening period, both stopped by VCU goalkeeper Jackson Van Arsdale.
VCU broke open the scoreless match in the 57th minute when Philipp Daldrup took the cross from Romario Blandon and put the shot in the right-side of the goal, giving the Rams the 1-0 lead. Longwood would not stay down for long as Headley scored his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute off a pass from senior
Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam CTC). Both teams had scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation but neither could score. Sophomore
Zack Mahon/San Antonio, Texas (William Howard Taft) almost converted after collecting an open ball in front of the net, but Van Arsdale made one of his seven saves on the night to thwart the attempt.
Headley would continue pressing in overtime, taking three shots in the two 10-minute periods, two of them on goal. He had a header in the second overtime that he aimed towards the far corner, but Van Arsdale again made the save just under the crossbar.
“Our hard work was rewarded tonight,” said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. “Our team showed a lot of maturity after falling behind 1-0 and coming back to tie the match. If we maintain this level and get the extra goal, we'll be better served in the future. We will celebrate this moral victory tonight and get ready for a tough George Mason team on Wednesday.”
Longwood outshot VCU 13-8 and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks for the game. Headley led the Lancers with five shots, three on goal, while Pierce, Vickerton and
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) each had two shots.
