Six Lancers Earn VaSID Academic All-District Honors

Curtis, Daniel, Izarra, Nelson, Uribe, Vick All Earn Distinction

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its annual Academic All-State team today, and six Longwood student-athletes were honored for their achievements.
 
Women's soccer player Sara Curtis, men's cross country and track runner Alec Daniel, women's tennis player Oriana Izarra, baseball player James Nelson, men's tennis player Alejandro Uribe, and women's cross country and track runner Lauren Vick all earned the distinction.
 
Curtis, a senior, was the Big South Goalkeeper of the Year in women's soccer, and she was also the team's All-Academic Team selection this past fall. She posted five straight shutouts to close the regular season, and she was a President's List honoree as well. She majored in business administration.
 
Daniel was a team captain for the Lancer cross country and track teams. He consistently posted strong times in the fall and ran the steeplechase in the spring at the Big South Championship. In addition, Daniel also was a President's or Dean's List regular during his time as a student at Longwood, and the graduated senior earned his degree in business administration. He earned Big South All-Academic Team honors in both cross country and track.
 
Izarra, a junior on the women's tennis team, has also been a strong performer in the classroom and earned CSC Academic All-District team honors this past spring, and she has repeatedly earned recognition on the Dean's List. In addition, she picked up four singles wins last season while also finishing with 14 wins in doubles. She is majoring in business administration.
 
Nelson, a graduate student, was a mainstay in the heart of the Longwood baseball lineup. While working on his MBA, he batted .323 with 16 doubles while also hitting eight home runs and driving in 49 runs. He earned CSC Academic All-District honors and Big South All-Academic Team honors as well. During his time at Longwood, he was a Dean's List honoree five times and President's List selection twice more.
 
Uribe, a junior, was a CSC Academic All-District honoree and also earned a Big South First Team doubles selection this season. He had doubles wins over Wake Forest, who was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time, in addition to George Mason, William & Mary and Howard. He is majoring in business administration.
 
Vick, a junior, will graduate early after recording a perfect 4.00 GPA during her Longwood career. She was one of two Lancers to earn the Big South's George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence. She majored in communication sciences and disorders. She ran in multiple events during the track season, and she also was a key member of the women's cross country team during her three seasons.
