Johnson's Golden Goal Caps Gritty Lancer Comeback

Longwood Downs Kent State 3-2 in Overtime to Earn MAC Win

KENT, Ohio – Channy Johnson came up big in the clutch, and Longwood field hockey was relentless on the road at Kent State on Sunday.

The result? A thrilling 3-2 comeback win with Johsnon's game winner in overtime capping a gritty comeback by the Lancers (3-8, 1-3 MAC) on the road.

Johnson scored two goals for her second multi-goal game of the season, and Zoe Tierney added an equalizer of her own to help send the game to overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Kent State (2-8, 1-3 MAC) led early behind a goal from Emma Rolston, but the Lancer back line and goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk buckled down and kept it there.

Then, Hailey Flick and Johnson combined to equalize the score. Nine minutes into the third quarter, Flick found Johnson near the cage, and Johnson batted it home to make it 1-1.

Kent State had a hot start in the fourth, earning a penalty corner, and Delfina Larripa found Lauren Conroy to pull ahead with a 2-1 lead.

But Longwood wasn't done. With three minutes left to play, Tierney put home her second goal of the season to knot the score are two apiece.

Early in overtime, Johnson evaded one defender and powered home a shot from the left side for the golden goal and the 3-2 win.

Mooldijk picked up the win in goal for Longwood while making 15 saves.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"This week was about resetting and refocusing," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "We stayed focused and were intentional all week. I'm really proud of their fight today and ability to come back from behind twice. They did it together and rewarded themselves for all the hard work."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers will travel up to Amherst, Massachusetts, to face the No. 14-ranked UMass Minutewomen on Friday, October 10th, at 4 pm.
