FARMVILLE, Va. – Clinton Clancy led a young Longwood men's cross country team with a 19
th place finish at the Big South Championship today.
Â
The junior broke 26 minutes for a third straight race, and the Lancer men finished sixth out of nine teams in the 8K.
Â
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Â
The Lancers were sixth amid a tightly contested middle group in the Big South, and the team average time was once again of the fastest marks in team history. Longwood finished with 155 points, 29 behind Radford in fifth.
Â
While Clancy, a junior, was the team's top finisher, the four other scorers were all freshman. That was the youngest top five grouping in the league, with the champions, Charleston Southern, boasting four seniors in their top five runners.
Â
Clancy's time of 25:47.5, the eighth-fastest 8K in team history, which is all the more impressive that it was done on the challenging Longwood home course that features multiple hills.
Â
Freshman
AJ Koval broke 26 minutes for a second straight race as well to finish 22
nd. His time of 25:54 was just outside the top 10 times after adding his name to the record books at USC Upstate.
Â
Fellow freshman
Jaiden Santos-Nguyen put together a strong race as well, running his second-fastest time of the year with a 26:26.6 to finish 32
nd.
Â
Andrew Hathaway, also a freshman, finished 45
th with a 27:05.5, and
Sean Arjona, the fifth scorer and fourth straight freshman finisher for the team, was 55
th with a 27:47.0.
Â
Following the race, Clancy was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"They wanted to try for third today, and our big things is that if you don't shoot for it, you're not going to get it," said Longwood Director of Cross Country and Track & Field
Brooke Craig. "We knew that we were coming in with a very young squad. A majority of the top of the men's team was freshman."
Â
"AJ and Clint put themselves in the mix," Craig said. "They landed pretty high up. For both of them, it's the highest finish that we've ever had [the previous top finisher was 23
rd in 2014]. Both were just shy of getting all-conference
