FARMVILLE, Va. – Talk about grit. Longwood field hockey gutted out a tough win over Georgetown, winning in a shootout 2-1.

The Lancers (5-12) earned the win after rallying from a goal down, and then the team clutched up in the shootout.

Zoe Tierney scored the clincher, and Madison Wiley and Caitlin Carraway also put home their chances to win the shootout 3-1 over the Hoyas (3-14). Sophie Mooldijk also stopped three of the four shootout shots she faced after making 10 saves in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The two teams were locked in defensively and made chances hard to come by early in a fast and furious hockey match.

Longwood had a pair of shots early and forced two saves from Bailey Tietz in the opening quarter, and the Lancer back line didn't surrender a shot in that same stretch. Tietz finished with eight saves for Georgetown.

Mooldijk then made four saves in the second quarter to keep Georgetown off the board, sweeping aside the four scoring chances that managed to slip through the stout Lancer defense.

After halftime, Georgetown took the lead on a rebound chance for Ellie Johnson. She narrowly slipped it in for the 1-0 lead for the Hoyas on her first goal of the season.

Longwood then started applying heavy pressure and broke through on the second of back-to-back corners. Ireland McDermott fired a shot from the top that deflected home to knot the score at one on her third goal of the season. Hunter-Paige Johnson and Kinsey Waddell had the helpers.

In the fourth quarter, the Lancers created chance after chance, racking up five corners in the process. Ultimately, Tietz and the Georgetown defense bent but didn't break.

The Lancer back line, then, returned the favor in overtime as Georgetown fired off seven shots in the first 10 minutes of additional time. However, Mooldijk made three saves, Tierney added a defensive save, and the score stayed locked at one apiece.

After the second overtime came and went, the two sides lined up for a shootout. Mooldijk saved the first penalty shot she saw, but Georgetown took the lead on Elena Perez Alejandro's solid move on the team's second attempt.

Carraway evened it up with a well-placed snipe, and Mooldijk turned aside back-to-back Hoyas while Wiley gave Longwood a 2-1 lead. Then Tierney buried her chance to send the team streaming onto the field for the senior day win.

UP NEXT:

The season is complete for the Lancers, and the team heads into the offseason to gear up to chase the MAC crown in the fall of 2025.
