DAVIDSON, N.C. – A stout effort by the Longwood field hockey team paved the way for the Lancers to shut out Davidson on Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 win.

Goals (Assists)
Â
13' – Longwood:
Hunter-Paige Johnson (
Maroussia Walckiers)
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Davidson (3-3) applied heavy pressure throughout the first quarter, but Longwood (2-3) seized the opportunity to strike first.
Â
After forcing a turnover, the Lancers raced up the field on a counterattack.
Maroussia Walckiers found
Hunter-Paige Johnson up the field, and Johnson banged it home for a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute.
Â
Meanwhile, the Lancer defense of
Kolbey Donahue,
Kylie Levine and
Ireland McDermott, coupled with goalkeeper
Lara Van Nunen, locked down the Wildcats. While Davidson fired 10 shots, only three were on goal, with Van Nunen coming up with a trio of big saves.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"It was a hot one today, but we fought for four quarters," said Longwood head coach
Miranda Rigg. "Davidson did not make it easy on us, and the score reflects that. Overall, it was nice to get a win after a busy week, especially on the road."
Â
"Lara played a really strong game in goal for us, and it was great to see her get her first shutout," Rigg added about her sophomore goalkeeper. "We still generated a lot of pressure with our attack even though the score doesn't reflect it."
Â
"We're still working on managing our defensive circle during chaotic times," Rigg said about where her team is continuing to grow. "Also, our attacking penalty corners are looking better, but we still need to work on finishing throughout the whole corner."
Â
