Longwood Battles, But Richmond Field Hockey Spoils Lancer Home Opener

Spiders Strike Twice After Halftime, Down Longwood 4-2

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey put up a good fight, but Richmond weathered the Lancer attack and used sustained pressure of their own to take down Longwood 4-2.

Goals (Assists)

22' – Longwood: Sophia Loscher (Floor Schouten)
23' – Richmond: Regan McCrossan (Stevie Drum)
27' – Richmond: Evie Hanson (Madelyn Curtis)
33' – Richmond: Lindsey Frank
35' – Longwood: Caroline Hampton (Sophia Loscher, Madison Wiley)
56' – Richmond: Lainey Nichols

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Neither side found much success offensively in the first quarter, but Longwood (1-1) struck first in the second quarter. Sophia Loscher took a corner and slipped it home for a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

However, Richmond (1-1) countered quickly with a tic-tac-toe sequence, as Stevie Drum snuck a pass to Regan McCrossan on the back side of the cage. McCrossan slotted it home to make it 1-1 just a shade more than a minute after Longwood took the lead.

The Spiders took their first lead on Evie Hanson's deflection in front of the net with 2:30 left in the first half.

Preseason All-A10 selection Lindsey Frank drilled a shot home from the right side of the circle to give Richmond a 3-1 lead early in the second half.

Caroline Hampton found space in front of the cage and polished off a nice buildup from Madison Wiley and Loscher to cut the lead to 3-2 in the 35th minute, but Richmond's defense put the clamps on from that point.

UR's Lainey Nichols pushed home a ball that squirted loose from a scramble in front of Longwood's cage in the 56th minute to help seal the match.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Overall, we need to be able to play our game for four full quarters, but I believe we will get there," said Longwood head coach Miranda Rigg after the match. "Richmond is a great team, and it was good to play them early in the season to get some more competitive game experience in."

"When we worked the ball up the field as a team, we had some really nice counter attacks," Rigg said about some of her team's successes. "Our defensive penalty corner unit held strong and didn't let up there, which is huge growth for us even this early in the season."

"We lost some battles in the circles today both on the attack and defensively," Rigg said about where her team can continue to grow. "Once we clean those areas up, it will lead to a different outcome next time."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Senior Caroline Hampton has now scored in back-to-back games to start the year for Longwood after notching one goal in her first three seasons with the Lancers.

Lara Van Nunen came up with seven saves for Longwood. Several saves came in the second half as Longwood was under heavy pressure from the Richmond attack. She had six of her saves in the second and fourth quarters.

Richmond goalkeeper Erika Latta made six saves, as the Preseason All-A10 selection stymied several point-blank attempts for Longwood.

Richmond had five penalty corners to Longwood's three.

The Spiders had 15 shots to Longwood's 11.
