WASHINGTON, D.C. – Seventy minutes of regulation wasn't enough. Neither were 20 minutes of overtime.
Â
Instead, Longwood (8-6, 3-2 MAC) and Georgetown forced each other into a penalty shootout where Hoyas goalkeeper Ciara Weets came out on top of a goalkeeper's duel by stopping three of the Lancers' attempts and leading Georgetown to a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field.
Â
In a showdown between two top-50 teams, Weets and Longwood goalkeeper
Katie Wyman traded highlights throughout the five-period barn burner, combining for 10 saves in a defensive battle that produced a 1-1 deadlock last through the end of regulation and two overtime periods.
Â
Those two both recovered from surrendering first-half goals – Georgetown's Anna Farley scoring the first at the six-minute mark and Lancer senior
Leonie Verstraete driving in the equalizer in the 22nd minute – to keep the scoreboard at 1-1 for the final 68 minutes of play. Even in the shootout, Wyman and Weets allowed just three of the 10 shots they faced to get through, but Weets' save of
Clara Meschini's attempt secured the Georgetown win.
Â
"It was a tough game on a cold day against Georgetown," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "We kept ourselves in it the whole game; we could have executed our chances a bit better, but we'll have a good run up to preparing for Ball State and the tournament. We're obviously annoyed that we lost, but we know we can do better and we plan to do so."
Â
The shootout was the first in a collegiate game for every player on Longwood's roster, with the program's last coming four seasons ago against MAC foe Ohio on Sept. 14. It was the Hoyas' second straight, however, and this time they were able to avenge the 2-1 shootout loss they suffered at home against Providence two days ago.
Â
The loss give the Lancers back-to-back defeats for the first time this season but sets the stage for a high-stakes regular-season finale against MAC foe Ball State on Saturday, Oct. 27. That matchup will have significant MAC Championship seeding implications, as the third-place Lancers trail second-place Kent State (4-1) by one game and hold a slim one-game lead over fourth-place Ohio (2-3) and Ball State (2-3).
Â
Longwood has earned third-place finishes in the MAC in back-to-back seasons and would secure the MAC's No. 3 seed in the postseason for the third straight year with a win over Ball State.
