MUNCIE, Ind. – For the second straight game, Longwood field hockey needed more than 90 minutes to determine a winner.
Â
The Lancers ended Saturday's regular season finale with a shootout win, as
Cammy Toddy,
Mia Leeman and
Karly Harwood converted shootout attempts to lift Longwood past Mid-American foe Ball State 3-2 at Briner Sports Complex.
The Lancers (9-6, 4-2 MAC) secured a No. 3 seed for the third consecutive season in next week's MAC Tournament and will await the winner of Wednesday's first round game between No. 6 seed Appalachian State and No. 7 seed Central Michigan in the quarterfinals of the tournament Thursday, Nov. 1.
"This was a very tough performance. We showed a lot of character against a lot of adversity today, and I'm proud of the team and how they played to gut out with a win," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "We learned a lot of lessons from Georgetown, and they showed today we learned those lessons and adapted quickly. Great game, happy to finish third, and we're looking forward to the tournament starting Thursday."
In goal, redshirt-junior
Katie Wyman outdueled Ball State's Grace Chavez, making six saves and not allowing a Ball State goal in the shootout against three shots. The performance for Wyman marked her seventh game of the season making at least six saves, as she was aided by a backline of
Rio Weber,
Mia Leeman and
Clara Meschini.
Olivia Wawrzyniak and Leonie Verstaete, both ranked among the top five in the conference in goals scored, each added a pair of goals, both coming in a first half that saw the two teams combine for four goals.
Â
The goal for Verstraete marked her team-leading 11th of the season, as she has scored 39 goals in the last three seasons to move past her former teammate
Edel Nyland and into second all-time in Longwood's Division I era in career goals, trailing only the 54 goals scored by Stacy de Grandhomme.
Â
Meanwhile, Wawrzyniak continued her breakout season with her eighth of the season and Longwood moving to 6-1 when she scores at least one goal with her goal Saturday coming in the 22nd minute on an unassisted strike.
Â
Rachel Pereira and Michelle Shampton scored the goals for Ball State (2-15, 2-4 MAC), as Chavez finished the game with five saves. Â
Â
Longwood will seek its third straight appearance in the MAC semifinal, as the Lancers will open the tournament in Oxford, Ohio Thursday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m.
