Box Score RADFORD, Va. – A surge of shots weren't enough for the Lancers to knock off the top team in the Big South, as Radford staved off 18 shots by Longwood in a 1-0 victory for the Highlanders Wednesday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.
The Lancers (5-8-0, 2-2-0 Big South) put together several scoring opportunities, firing 21 shots and placing eight shots on goal, but a goal in the 24th minute by Jessica Wollman lifted Radford (6-4-0, 4-0-0 Big South) to a 1-0 win. Longwood outshot the first-place Highlanders 21-7 in the loss, but Radford keeper Courtenay Kaplan turned away the Lancers with her second consecutive shutout in conference play.
"That's some of the best soccer we've ever played against Radford and we lost 1-0," Longwood women's soccer head coach
Todd Dyer said. "Possession and statistics don't mean a thing if we have defensive lapses on one end and don't finish our chances on the other end."
Five Lancers took multiple shots and seven players placed a shot on goal, including senior forward
Christina Corbin, who took a pair of shots and placed both on goal in the match. Longwood took 10 corners in the loss compared to four for Radford.
Janese Quick led the Lancers in shots with five taken, including one placed on goal.
Longwood's junior keeper
Maria Kirby made three saves on seven shots faced, extending her conference lead in saves and save percentage, but Wollman's shot in the 24th from the right corner of the box went through at the top of the goal, beating Kirby and proved to be the game-winner.
"This one stings for sure, but we'll use it," Dyer said. "This group can do some special things in the field, but we still have to mature a little bit and learn how to manage games from beginning to end."
Longwood returns home for the first match of a doubleheader at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The Lancers host the Presbyterian Blue Hose at 2 p.m., followed by the Longwood men's soccer team's match against Gardner-Webb, which kicks off at 6 p.m.
