Lancers Drop Season Opener to Campbell, 2-0

Longwood outshoots Camels, 6-5, in strong second half

FARMVILLE, Va. — Campbell scored once in each half and held the Longwood women's soccer team scoreless Thursday night, defeating the Lancers 2-0 in the season opener at Longwood Athletics Complex.

Avery Garrett put Campbell ahead in the 40th minute, scoring the first goal of the season off a chance that gave the Camels a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Longwood created more opportunities after the break, putting five of its six second-half shots on goal. Campbell goalkeeper Anais van Doesburg turned away all five attempts to preserve the shutout.

"It was a pretty even game statistically but we didn't finish any of our chances and hurt ourselves defensively, especially on the second goal," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "We fought until the end but the body of work over 90 minutes just wasn't enough to beat a strong team like Campbell. Lots to build on though as we prepare for ODU on the road."

Campbell added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Ava Kanaar scored with an assist from Abby Connolly, extending the lead to 2-0.

Longwood finished with nine shots, including six on goal, while Campbell registered 13 shots with 10 on target. Lancers goalkeeper Brynn Clagett made seven saves in her collegiate debut.

Meghan Piazza, Peyton Curney and Coryn Silberstein each recorded a shot on goal for Longwood, while Berni Wayland led the Lancers with two shots.

The match was the first between the former Big South Conference foes since the Camels joined the Coastal Athletic Association in 2023. Campbell now leads the all-time series, 11-5-3.

Longwood falls to 0-1-0 on the season and will return to action Sunday at Old Dominion. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., in Norfolk.
