FARMVILLE, VA. – Richmond forward Meaghan Carrigan scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 78th minute, to lead the Spiders past Longwood 2-1 Sunday afternoon in front of 1,450 fans at Longwood's Athletics Complex.

Carrigan scored the first goal of the game off a deflection just over 11 minutes into regulation and then netted the game-winner off a long cross in front of the net from Lexi Prillaman late in the second half.

"The Longwood and Farmville community created an incredible sporting atmosphere," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "We fought as hard as we could, but the better team won tonight. Their formation gave us trouble in the first half, but we made the adjustments at halftime and came out a better team in the second."

Longwood (1-1) surrendered the early goal in the 12th minute but battled back to tie the game at the 54:47 mark in the second half when a series of passes set up by Kelsey McDonald opened up freshman Teresa Fruchterman for the equalizer. McDonald, a senior defender, picked up a loose ball in Richmond territory and dribbled to the penalty arc where she threaded a pass to teammate Olivia Colella. Colella took the ball and on two touches dished it inside to Fruchterman, who lifted a shot over the outstretched arms of Richmond goalkeeper Emily Kelly and into the left side of the net.

Fruchterman, a freshman forward from Annandale, Va., has now scored in her first two games as a Lancer. She also had the game-tying goal in Friday's 2-1 win at American.

Richmond (1-1) struggled to find the net against the Lancer defense throughout the game, sending eight of their 15 shots off goal, but Carrigan took advantage of two point-blank opportunities in front of the goal to give the Spiders the win. Longwood goalkeeper Hailey Machen (1-1) recorded five saves on the night, though her first of the game bounced right to the feet of Carrigan who tapped it in to an open net.

"In the end a few of their players had some better moments than ours," Dyer said. "The goal we conceded put us in the hole again. We had a couple good chances after that, but it just wasn't our night. We'll learn from all of it and come out a better team on Friday."

After Fruchterman tied the game in the second half, Longwood would hold the game at a draw for the next 24 minutes while Machen and the Longwood backfield batted away two shots on goal during that span. Longwood sophomore Amanda Spencer, who led the team with nine goals as a freshman, responded by firing her third shot of the game toward the Richmond net, but it sailed across the goal and rolled out just wide left.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1, the clock ticked away until the 77:26 mark when Prillaman dribbled all the way to the Longwood goal line and lofted a cross to the other post where Carrigan was waiting to tap it in. The 2-1 margin would stand until the final horn, handing the Lancers their first loss and doing so in front of a boisterous Lancer crowd drummed up by the school's annual Greatest Athletics March Ever (G.A.M.E.) event.

Longwood would have two more late opportunities to score, but Spencer sent her fourth shot of the game over the net. Senior Samantha Phillips, who scored the game-winner against American Friday, nearly created a scoring chance of her own in the final two minutes when she met Richmond keeper Kelly at a loose ball, but Kelly knocked it away and held up Phillips just long enough for the Spiders to clear the ball and spoil Longwood's final scoring chance.

The Lancers return to action this Friday, Aug. 29, in another home game against Western Carolina at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex. That will be the second of four straight home games for Longwood, which follows by hosting VMI on Sept. 3 and Virginia Tech on Sept. 9.
