DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomores Nicole Deckard/Selinsgrove, Pa. and Jennifer Burris/Virginia Beach scored one goal apiece in the first half to propel the Longwood University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) opponent Davidson College (6-12, 2-6) in the squads' regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon. Sophomores Kim Ruiter/Huizen, the Netherlands and Meghan O'Connor tallied one assist each to add to the offensive effort. Longwood (8-11, 6-2) has earned the No. 2 seed in the East Division for the 2013 NorPac Conference Tournament that will take place on November 7-9 in Lynchburg, hosted by Liberty University. The Lancers will square off against the No. 3 seed in the West Division, the University of the Pacific, in a quarterfinal match on Thursday, Nov. 7 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
"This was a tough game, as it always is against Davidson," said head coach Iain Byers. "We were very happy to close the season with a 2-0 record this weekend, especially in a pair of conference games on an away trip like this. Our performance today showed the progress that we thought we had made over the season and we're starting to hit our stride, so it's good to have some momentum going into the NorPac Tournament."
The Wildcats took an early advantage, as Anna Davis collected a rebound off the pads of freshman goalkeeper Lauren Bernard/Langhorne, Pa. before chipping a shot of her own up into the back of the cage to give Davidson a 1-0 lead just over nine minutes into play. The Lancers retaliated with a pair of penalty corners and a shot by senior Stacey de Grandhomme/Cape Town, South Africa that was blocked by a defender. Less than three minutes later, however, Longwood knotted the score at 1-1 when Ruiter dished a pass across the circle to Deckard on the left side for the shot on goal. The visitors continued to control the game's momentum, converting on a penalty corner opportunity in the 19th minute, as Burris inserted to O'Connor, who sent the ball back to the post for Burris to play it into the opposite corner of the cage, putting the Lancers on top, 2-1. Longwood tallied four more chances in the next 11 minutes, but the first three were turned away by DC keeper Carolyn Macek and the fourth sailed wide. Davidson's Katherine English notched the final attempt of the half, which was blocked, keeping the Lancers 2-1 edge intact at the half.
Much of the action in the second half was confined to Davidson's offensive end of the field. The Wildcats accounted for all nine shots of the period, but Longwood played solid defense anchored by Bernard, who came up with a pair of saves, to hold its opponents scoreless en route to the 2-1 victory.
Longwood took a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, although the Wildcats outshot the Lancers, 12-8, overall. Bernard registered three save in her first career victory. Sunday's contest marked the 28th meeting between Longwood and Davidson in the sport of field hockey. With the victory, the Lancers now lead the all-time series, 14-13-1.
