Longwood Defeats VCU 2-1

<div dir="ltr"> September 15, 2011<br /> <a href="/custompages/fhockey/2011/0915vcu.htm"><br /> Box Score</a><br /> <br /> RICHMOND, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Virginia Commonwealth University of the Colonial Athletic Association 2-1 on Thursday evening in Richmond. Longwood was led by sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) with two goals, while junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded nine saves for the Lancers (3-4) against the Rams (2-5). Longwood returns home after five-straight road matches when it hosts the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Sunday, September 18 at 1 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.<br /> <br /> de Grandhomme put the Lancers ahead 1-0 at 4:51 when she scored on a penalty corner that was inserted by senior Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) and set up by senior Sarah Bietsch|Chambersburg, Pa. (Chambersburg Area). VCU tied the match on a goal by Arialle Hess at 26:49 and the teams entered halftime tied 1-1. Goulding made five saves in the first half.<br /> <br /> In the second half, the two teams battled but could not break the tie until de Grandhomme collected a loose ball on the right side of the circle and blasted a shot past the VCU goalkeeper to give Longwood the 2-1 lead at 65:08. VCU had a pair of shots down the stretch, but Goulding made a save and the other went wide as the Lancers held on to win 2-1.<br /> <br /> Longwood was led by de Grandhomme with a team-high three shots with two shots on goal, while junior Kaity Byrum|Suffolk (Lakeland) added two shots on goal. It was the fourth career multi-goal match for de Grandhomme and her first this season. VCU was led by Hess with a match-high six shots and Erin Jablonski with four saves. The Rams outshot the Lancers 16-8 and had a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.</div>
