FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team fell to the second-ranked University of North Carolina 5-0 on Tuesday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Longwood (2-8) starts a six-match road swing on Saturday, October 2, when they travel to Davidson, North Carolina, to take on NorPac foe Davidson College at 1 p.m..
“North Carolina is a great team,” said third-year head coach
Iain Byers. “Our performance wasn't as good as it had been against other strong teams earlier this season. We didn't take care of the ball is well as we could. We played against a top-ranked, undefeated team, and that is only going to help us going into this weekend's trip to Davidson and Appalachian State.”
North Carolina (10-0) led 2-0 at halftime. The Tar Heels scored the first goal in the eighth minute when Kelsey Kolojejchick sent a shot to the near post from the right side. Jaclyn Radvany added an unassisted goal in the 13th minute to make the score 2-0. Longwood had a penalty corner in the 18th minute, but a shot by freshman

North Carolina added three goals in the second half. Caitlin Van Sickle scored from the left side before Kolojejchick scored a pair of goals off penalty corners, with Marta Malmberg assisting on both. The Lancers had a chance to score on a penalty corner after time expired. de Grandhomme fired a shot and beat the goalkeeper, but Van Sickle was on the line and came up with the defensive save.

Kaye Goulding | Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded seven saves in 63:54 in goal while allowing five goals. Sophomore
Amy Lewis | Lewisville, N.C. (Forsyth Country Day) played the final 6:06 in goal. de Grandhomme led Longwood offensively with two shots, including one shot on goal.
Jackie Kintzer (65:42) and Caitlin Powers (4:18) combined for the shutout. Kolojejchick scored three goals on three shots, while Van Sickle had a game-high six shots. Malmberg had a pair of assists.
The Tar Heels outshot Longwood 17-2 and had a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.
