FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to visiting Ball State University on Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers were led by senior Kimberly Sullivan | Fredericksburg (Stafford) and junior Amanda Babineau | Stafford (Mountain View) with one goal each. Ball State's Devanny Kuhn scored the winning goal 11:01 in to the first overtime period. Longwood (0-1) returns to action on Tuesday, August 31, when they host Siena College at 3 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Admission to all field hockey matches at the Athletics Complex is free.

“The loss was certainly disappointing,” said third-year head coach Iain Byers. “We played well throughout, especially in the midfield, but we need to execute better on offense and defense. We will learn from this and get better against Siena on Tuesday.”

Ball State (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after CJ Hermes scored in the seventh minute on a shot from just inside the circle. The Lancers answered in the 27th minute after Babineau tipped a pass from junior Sarah Bietsch | Chambersburg, Pa. (Chambersburg Area) into the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Cardinals' Hannah Jones scored three minutes later on a loose ball in front of the net to give Ball State the 2-1 halftime lead.

Longwood did not waste time knotting the game up again as Kimberly Sullivan took a pass from senior Lauren van de Kamp | Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) and tied the game in the 40th minute. Neither team would score in the final 30 minutes of regulation as the Lancers out-shot Ball State 3-0 during that span.

Longwood had several opportunities as van de Kamp and senior Lauren Sullivan | Fredericksburg (Stafford) each missed the target in the first 70 seconds of overtime. Ball State had an opportunity to score when Brandi Mixell had an open look at the net, but van de Kamp came up with the defensive save to keep the Lancers alive. Kuhn took the ball from midfield and went to the left of Longwood sophomore goalkeeper Kaye Goulding | Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) to score the winning goal for the Cardinals.

Lauren Sullivan led Longwood with three shots, all on goal, while four others attempted a pair of shots. Kuhn led Ball State with four shots. Longwood out-shot the Cardinals 14-9 and had a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.

Goulding collected three saves in 81:01 while allowing three goals. Morgan Hammer had six saves for the game while giving up a pair of goals.
