BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a thrilling 2-1 women's soccer victory past visiting Big South Conference member Charleston Southern University Sunday afternoon in overtime at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior
Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) scored the game-winning goal at 92:52 as the Lancers (2-2) won their second-straight match and handed the Buccaneers (4-1) their first loss of the season. Longwood will return to action on Friday, September 11, hosting its third consecutive Big South opponent as Radford University visits the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..
Longwood fell behind 1-0 at the intermission as Charleston Southern got an early first-half goal from Sarah Catenacci just 1:17 into the match, unassisted on a shot from the top of the box. The Lancers returned the favor early in the second period when freshman
Lindsey Ottavio/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) took a nice through-pass from sophomore
Kacie Oliver/Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) and scored her second goal in as many matches. It remained tied through regulation as each keeper made three saves in the second half. In OT, DeSieno received a nice feed from junior
Jessica Varela/Midlothian (Clover Hill) while working hard in the box against a defender and beat the keeper for the game-winning goal just 2:52 into the extra period; pleasing another outstanding and vocal crowd of 275.
“This year's team is making a habit of doing things the hard way,” said 16th-year Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer '93. “Again, it's nice to see them respond after the early deficit and keep fighting, and ultimately find a way to get a result out of it. I thought Charleston Southern was a hard match-up for us, but it feels great to get a victory and go undefeated in our home tournament.”
Charleston Southern took a slight 17-13 advantage in shots, while it was 6-6 in attempts on-goal, and Longwood had a 6-4 edge on corner kicks. Freshman keeper
Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for Lancers with five saves. Alyssa Budros played the duration for the Buccaneers as well with four saves.
Earlier on Sunday, the University of Richmond defeated Coastal Carolina University 3-0.
