BOX SCORE
RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-0 women's soccer road decision at the University of Richmond from the Atlantic 10 Conference Sunday night in Richmond. The Lancers had their five-match winning streak stopped, falling to 5-3 overall while the Spiders improved to 4-4-1 overall. Longwood will play again on Friday, September 25, remaining on the road at Mount St. Mary's University of the Northeast Conference in Emmittsburg, Maryland beginning at 7 p.m..
Richmond scored the first goal of the contest early-on at 10:01 as Shondel Archer found the net off a cross from Kristen Stalter. The Spiders secured their home victory with a late goal at 85:43 when Kristen Schmitt tallied off an assist from Kelsey Rdzanek.
“It was a tough loss against a very good Richmond team,” said veteran 16th-year Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer '93. “We were the better team at creating scoring chances, and Richmond was the better team at finishing their chances. We played really, really positive attacking soccer and it was just a matter of scoring a goal, which we couldn't and they were more opportunistic than us. I thought we outplayed a very good team on their field. We just need to figure out how to get results in situations like this.”
Longwood took a 22-10 advantage in shots, including 9-6 in attempts on-goal, and the Lancers had a 3-2 edge on corner kicks. Senior
Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) and freshman
Lindsey Ottavio/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) each had four shots for LU, while junior
Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) placed three shots on-goal. Freshman keeper
Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the entire match in front of the net for Lancers with four saves. Andrea Young played the duration for Richmond as well with nine saves.
