Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) foe Appalachian State University 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina. Junior Andrea Bastiaanse/Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial) scored the game-winning goal for the Lancers. Longwood has secured the #2 seed in the NorPac East Division and will face the West Division #3 seed Pacific University in the NorPac Championship on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m ET in Stanford, California.

Longwood (9-9, 4-2 NorPac) got on the scoreboard first when freshman Christina Verhulst/Yorktown (Grafton) took a pass from sophomore Amanda Babineau/Stafford (Mountain View) on a two-on-one breakaway and scored, giving the Lancers the early 1-0 lead. Neither team would score again in the first half, even though the Lancers attempted eight first-half shots, five being stopped by Appalachian State goalkeeper Denise Adams.

ASU (6-13, 1-5 ASC) would tie the match in the 62nd minute on a Kate Garnet goal from Lisa Charney. Neither team would score during the final minutes of regulation.

In the first overtime, ASU had four penalty corners, getting off six shots, two of them stopped by junior Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill). Bastiannse scored the deciding goal in the 86th minute to give Longwood the 2-1 victory.

“It is good to have a .500 winning percentage during the regular season,” said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. “We played well, but same as a lot of the season, we just couldn't score. We are going in to the NorPac Tournament on a high note. Our only goal now is to be playing on Saturday.”

Verhulst led Longwood with four shots, all on goal. Bastiaanse added three shots on goal. Bollinger had  eight saves and gave up one goal in 85 minutes in the cage.

ASU was led by Charney with three shots on goal and one assist. Garnet and Jessie Harris each had two shots on goal. Adams had 10 saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

Longwood outshot ASU 17-13 and had a 10-6 edge in penalty corners, including a 10-2 advantage in regulation.
