DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey (4-4) team picked up its third consecutive win of the season to improve to .500, after defeating Davidson ( 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers received their game winning goal from senior
Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) in the 30th minute of the game. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, September 21 in Davidson, N.C., for a neutral site conference game against Stanford at 12 p.m.
The Lancers had possession for the majority of the game, outshooting the Wildcats 11-3, seven of which came in the first half of action. Despite being in control of the game, Davidson got on the board first, scoring its only goal of the game in the 25th minute. Longwood answered back two minutes later with a rocket shot from junior
Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood). Turners shot came at the top of the shooting circle off a penalty corner in the 27th minute, played in by sophomore Lauren Van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) and stopped by freshman
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener von Siemens Gymnasium).
“We played very well today,” said head coach
Iain Byers. “We did not let the Davidson goal rattle us and continued to play our game. Our girls are more confident than ever and with good reason. We are playing very good field hockey. We look to continue our progress.”
Binnewies put the game away for the Lancers in the 29th minute, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Turner wrapped up her great game by assisting on Binnewies goal. The goal came after a penalty corner that was taken by Turner and rebounded to Binnewies.
Senior
Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) was not forced to make a single save in her seventh complete game of the season.
