MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore Hailey Flick scored early in the fourth quarter, but Longwood field hockey could not complete the comeback, dropping a 3-1 decision at Ball State in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened
- Ball State (3-6, 1-2 MAC) scored less than five minutes into the first quarter off a penalty corner. Lauren Lewis gave the home team a 1-0 lead with a shot from the top of the circle. Emily Kate Covert and Jade Vandevoorde earned the assists.

- Longwood nearly equalized with four minutes left in the opening quarter on a sequence of three shots off a penalty corner. Sophomore Caitlin Meeker, Flick and freshman Sawyer Anderson each had chances in front, but Ball State goalkeeper Carleigh Hofelich made the stop each time to keep the Lancers off the board.

- Senior Channy Johnson almost generated a penalty stroke for the Lancers in the 18th minute, working the ball along the right endline near the crease. After an official review, Longwood was awarded a corner. They worked it back to the near post on the play, but Anderson's shot was blocked by Hofelich.

- Just over two minutes into the second half, Johnson nearly caught the Cardinals on a counter chance, but her shot went wide of the left post.

- Ball State pushed its lead to 2-0 with another penalty corner goal in the 35th minute. Lewis sent a hard pass on the ground to the right side of the crease where Emalene Harter redirected it up and into the upper part of the cage.

- Flick pulled the Lancers within 2-1, scoring her first goal of the season just 25 seconds into the fourth quarter. Johnson carried the ball to the end line and flipped it back to the middle of the area. Flick gained possession and lifted a shot over the top of the Ball State goalkeeper to close the gap.

- With Longwood (0-8, 0-3 MAC) pushing forward for the equalizer, Ball State put the game on ice with a transition goal in the 57th minute. Vivienne Quinn took the ball to the end line and centered a pass to Jade Vandevoorde who redirected it into the cage to push the margin to 3-1.

- In goal, junior Sophie Mooldijk finished with 12 saves on the afternoon. It was her sixth game of double-digit saves this season.  

- Sophomore Audrey White was credited with her first defensive save in the first quarter. Flick topped Longwood with four shots, including two on goal.
