Lancers beat Dukes for first time since 2018

HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Longwood men's tennis team won its second consecutive match Sunday, beating James Madison, 4-3, on the East Campus Tennis Courts.

With the win, Longwood's fourth against JMU since 2004, the Lancers improve to 2-3 on the season. The victory is its first over the Dukes since March 24, 2018 in Farmville. The Lancers' last win in Harrisonburg came on March 29, 2009.

James Madison (4-3) opened the match winning the doubles point as Esteve Agusti and Francisco Sinopoli topped Timéo Puech and Daniel Borisov, 6-1, on court one before Harrison Lee and Aurelien Schmitt defeated Daniel Lopez and Alejandro Uribe, 6-3, on court three.

In singles, Puech dispatched Agusti on No. 1, 7-5, 6-4, to knot the team match. The victory was the 100th of Puech's Longwood career.

JMU's Schmitt responded to beat Rufus Plane at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6 (4), at No. 3 as the Dukes retook the lead. Borisov then took care of Ryan Morgan in straight sets on court three, 6-2, 7-5.

Sinopoli bested Lopez, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 to make it 3-2, however, the Lancers claimed the final two bouts to take the dual.

Petter Lindquist was leading, 2-0, in the third set when Zach Fleishman retired. Fleishman won the first set, 6-4, and Lindquist returned the favor in the second, 6-2.

Uribe, for the second time in three days, clinched for Longwood. On Sunday, he beat Lee, 6-3, 7-5 on court six for the win.

Longwood returns to action Wednesday, hosting Ferrum at 2 p.m.
