FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood men's tennis team earned a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Richmond in its home opener on the New Lancer Courts on Friday.
Longwood dropped the doubles point to begin the day and saw senior Timéo Puech fall in a 6-2, 6-2 decision in No. 1 singles to Davis Wiley to go down, 2-0, but the Lancers dug themselves out of the early hole to beat Richmond (0-4) for the second consecutive season.
Daniel Lopez started the comeback with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Richmond's Otto Sewell at No. 4. Daniel Borisov followed, winning in three sets over Charlie Burrell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to knot the match at 2-2.
Rufus Plane then dispatched Paxton Pritchard, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3 to give Longwood (1-3) a 3-2 lead in the dual.
Alejandro Uribe clinched for Longwood, outlasting Sam Rathmanner on court six, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-0.
Petter Lindquist closed the match with a three-set win of his own over Cole Brashear at No. 5. Lindquist won, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Spiders took the early lead, claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. First Pritchard and Rathmanner beat Marko Mrdak and Plane, 7-5, at No. 2 before Wiley and Brashear topped Puech and Borisov, 6-4, at No. 1.
Uribe and Lopez defeated Burdell and Sewell, 6-2, on court two.
Puech was presented his Big South individual single championship ring in a pre-match ceremony.
Longwood is back in action Sunday when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on James Madison at 1 p.m.
