FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood guard
Alphonzo Billups III went off last week with his two finest performances as a Lancer, and the Big South Conference announced he was the Big South Co-Player of the Week today along with Kareem Rozier of Winthrop.
Billups shot better than 70 percent from the floor, and 62 percent from three, while recording back-to-back 20-point performances to average 22.5 points per game.
He opened the week with a breakout 20-point game against UNC Asheville on the national spotlight on ESPNU. In that contest, he went 8-11 from the deck, including four threes on seven tries, and he added two steals, two assists and a block.
The Richmond native then followed it up with career highs across the board in a thrilling overtime win over USC Upstate. He scored 25 points, hit six threes and grabbed eight rebounds—all career highs. In addition, he added three steals and three assists.
Billups sank all six of his triples after halftime, and his sixth one of the night gave Longwood the lead in overtime. He also assisted on the game-sealing basket in the waning seconds of the game.
The redshirt-junior is the second Lancer to earn Big South Player of the Week honors after
Elijah Tucker was named the same three weeks ago.
Longwood has three games remaining on the regular season. The Lancers head to Presbyterian on Thursday followed by a trip to Charleston Southern on Saturday. The team closes the season at home on Saturday, February 28 at 3 p.m. against Radford.
