Balanced Attack Keys Field Hockey Past Queens 3-1

Three Different Goal Scorers Lead Lancers on Sunday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Longwood field hockey had a balanced attack against the Queens Royals in the Lancers' (1-1) first win of the season on Sunday afternoon.

A different Lancer scored in each of the first three quarters to power the team to a 3-1 win. Channy Johnson and Hailey Flick both scored career-first goals, and Madison Wiley notched her seventh career goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Not even a minute into the game, Madison Wiley hammered the ball into the goal to give Longwood a 1-0 advantage. Throughout the first quarter, both teams traded scoring opportunities.

The Royals (0-1) had possession for most of the second quarter, earning four penalty corners in the 15 minute segment. Sophie Mooldijk made two saves to keep Queens scoreless.

Meanwhile, Longwood struck five minutes into the quarter. Freshman Hailey Flick scored from the top of the shooting circle for a 2-0 lead. After halftime, both teams traded scoring opportunities, moving it back and forth through the midfield. Twelve minutes into the second half, Longwood earned a penalty corner. Jane Ramsay inserted it in, and Channy Johnson, at point-blank range, powered it past the Queen's goalkeeper, extending Longwood's lead to 3-0 going into the fourth. The Lancers kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter, taking multiple attempts at the cage.

However, Queens was the side that scored when Enya Kemp cut the lead to 3-1 with six minutes to go.

The Lancers finished off the match thereafter though to preserve the 3-1 win.

Mooldijk (1-1) took the win, notching four saves in her appearance.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It feels good to get the first win of the season under our belts, especially on the road," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "Queens is a good team and gave us a challenge today. I'm glad we were able to make adjustments from Friday's game and finish in the circle today."
