Women's Soccer Falls 3-1 to Charlotte

Piazza Slots Home Penalty Kick, but 49ers Strike Twice After Halftime

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer struck first on Sunday against Charlotte, but the 49ers (3-1) had the answers after halftime to win 3-1 at the Longwood Athletic Complex.

Meghan Piazza slotted home a penalty kick in the opening 45 for the Lancers (3-1), but Charlotte's offense got on track thereafter and never stopped to pull away after halftime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

While Charlotte settled for deep shots early, Longwood created the best chance in the opening 35 minutes. A nice sequence off a free kick ultimately saw a Claire Schultz volley go wide.

A few minutes later, Longwood scored against the run of play. Taylor Hoag crossed a ball into the box, and Madison Fitzpatrick went down after colliding with a Charlotte defender. After a video review, Longwood was awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.

Piazza didn't miss.

But the visitors ramped up their energy and knocked on the door repeatedly, finally breaking through in the 36th minute. Landry Olson rifled in a shot, and Longwood goalkeeper Sara Curtis made a diving stop. Laura Cate Westerbeek pounced on the rebound and slid home her first collegiate goal to knot the score at one.

After the half, Longwood created some openings in the first 15 minutes, but Charlotte was the side that took the lead for good. In the 66th minute, another VAR review gave the visitors a penalty kick, and Amelia Brown put it home for the 2-1 lead.

The 49ers stayed in control, and Evie Craven muscled home a rebound off a scramble from a Megan Bradley shot to extend the lead to 3-1.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Tonight was definitely not our night, and Charlotte had a lot to do with that," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "Their shape gave us trouble in the first half, and that falls on me not having our team as prepared as we should have been. As the game settled in, I still thought they were more lively than us, more physical than us, and a lot better on the ball dealing with pressure than us. We just didn't have any answers for them and ended up defending way more than we would like to or should have to. It's a tough lesson but one that we will use to get better moving forward."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • The Lancers wrapped up a four-match homestand and will play back-to-back road matches next week.
  • The team has another four-match homestand this season.
  • Sara Curtis made eight saves in goal for the Lancers.

UP NEXT:

Longwood plays its first road match of the season with a trip to UMBC on Thursday, August 28th at 7 p.m. The match will air on ESPN+.
