Baseball Falls 7-1 To Richmond

Urbaniak Has Two Hits, But Two Innings Key Spiders

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood baseball stuck around in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate on Tuesday night against Richmond at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

While Richmond (26-13) won 7-1, the Lancers (10-31) kept hanging around behind strong work from the bullpen in the middle innings.

Kyle Miller, Alek Elges and Isaiah Brewington all put up zeroes on the mound for the Lancers, and Mikey Urbaniak had a pair of base hits while reaching base safely four times.

Richmond's arms were just as good though, with the Spiders striking out 11 batters on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Richmond took the lead with three unearned runs in the second inning after back-to-back Lancer errors.

The Lancers kept it there, though, thanks to the work out of the bullpen from Miller, Elges and Brewington, and Joe Castrichini was solid for two innings in the start despite the three unearned runs. That kept Longwood in the game against a high-powered Richmond offense.

But Glenn Smith worked around three hits in three innings of work for Richmond, and his defense helped him out with a double play that evaded damage in the third after back-to-back singles to start the inning for Longwood.

After the third inning, neither side had a hit until Carter Newman's one-out single in the seventh. He eventually came around to score on an error by Richmond to cut the lead to 3-1.

Richmond broke through in the eighth though and loaded the bases with nobody out. Three runs touched home, and one more scored in the ninth to extend the lead.

Smith (2-0) earned the win for Richmond, and Castrichini (1-1) took a tough luck loss for Longwood.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I thought the pitching staff was great tonight," said Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe. "They kept a really good offesne at bay for most of the game. Richmond got to us a bit there late, but we did a good job of limiting the damage."

"I was really happy about how the pitchers responded from this past weekend," Noe added. "They filled up the zone and pitched with conviction. That was great to see."

UP NEXT:
