FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood baseball pitching staff was solid for most of the night on Friday to start a three-game series at Buddy Bolding Stadium against Winthrop.
Longwood (10-32, 4-12 Big South) starter Guillermo Garcia, Jr. kept Longwood in the game, but Winthrop (23-21, 9-7 Big South) starter Harrison Wilson matched or exceeded Garcia as the Eagles won 8-2.
The Eagles limited Longwood's offense to five hits, although the Lancers did draw six walks.
Carter Newman reached base safely three times with two hits and a walk.
But Gabe Natividad and Koby Kropf each had three-hit days for Winthrop as both also scored three times.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Lancer pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts on the day against only two walks, but Winthrop's offense took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a Nate Chronis two-run double.
Garcia kept it there, though, for the next three innings while piling up strikeouts. He punched out a career-best nine against eight hits and no walks in six innings of work.
Winthrop extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth, though, on RBI base hits from Kropf and Alan Benhardt.
Meanwhile, Wilson (4-1) evaded the big inning on the mound for Winthrop. He only gave up three hits in 6.1 innings of work. He walked five against four strikeouts to earn the win.
Longwood got on the board in the seventh with an RBI fielder's choice from
Bentley Yeatts. The Lancers cut the lead to 4-2 in the eighth on an RBI single from
Mikey Urbaniak.
However, Winthrop plated four runs in the ninth, with only one earned, to extend the lead and put the game out of reach.
Garcia (3-5) took the tough luck loss for Longwood. He gave way to
Joe Castrichini for the seventh, and Castrichini threw 2.2 innings. He gave up four runs, but only one was earned, on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Isaiah Brewington came on in a tight spot and got the final out of the ninth.
Ben Rehkow (2) earned the save for Winthrop. He tossed the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts against one hit.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Our offense was shut down all night," said Longwood Head Coach
Ray Noe. "Credit to their pitching staff for attacking the zone and inducing weak contact."
"I thought Guillermo, Joe and Isaiah were fantastic tonight," said Noe. "Guillermo gave us another quality start. Joe was really sharp early and ran out of gas there late after some lackluster defense forced him to throw more than 30 pitches in the ninth inning."
"I'm excited to celebrate our seniors and grad guys tomorrow," Noe added. "Hopefully we can play cleaner tomorrow and come out with a win."
UP NEXT:
Longwood returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. It will be Senior Day at the ballpark as the Lancers honor their graduating seniors. In addition, the Press Club food truck will be present.
