HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Hoyas loaded the bases in the first inning and took advantage. Kavi Caster opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field.
Mikey Urbaniak led off the second with a single for Longwood, but Williams shut it down from there, and he kept the Lancer offense off balance throughout the rest of the game.
The Lancers put runners on in each of the next four innings, but Williams evaded the timely base hit each time.
Meanwhile, Georgetown used four runs again in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
Williams (2-0) pitched all seven innings for the home side to earn the win, and he struck out eight against two hits and one walk.
For Longwood,
Kyle Miller (0-1) took the loss after getting touched up in the first inning for four runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks.
Alek Elges came on and was solid in relief, tossing 4.1 innings. He struck out six. The righthander gave up five runs, but only two were earned, and he only surrendered one walk and five hits.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We need to continue to push the needle forward," said Longwood Head Coach
Ray Noe. "I thought we played on our heels the last two games of the weekend, and it showed. We have to get back to our fighter's mentality and show some grit and toughness over the course of the game."
