Men's Golf Finishes Third Amid Challenging Conditions

Lyons Leads Lancers by Tying for Third at ODU/Kilmarlic Intercollegiate

HARBINGER, N.C. – Longwood men's golf wrapped up its fall campaign while battling rainy, windy weather at the ODU/Kilmarlic Intercollegiate today.

The Lancers finished third out of 16 teams, marking their fourth straight top five finish.

Matthew Lyons carded a top three finish to lead the way for the team, and David Lafreniere joined him in the top 10 at the Par 71 course at the Kilmarlic Golf Club.

NOTABLE RESULTS:

Given the inclement weather surrounding the tournament, the Lancers closed the tournament by playing 27 holes today to wrap up round two and play the third and final round.

Longwood posted a 287-286-288—861 (+9), which had them finish two shots behind Georgetown in second and nine behind William & Mary, the tournament winners.

Lyons was the team's best player on the whole and posted three consistent rounds to tie for third. He had a field-best three eagles—one in each round. For the three rounds, he posted a 69-71-72—212 (-1). He added seven birdies as well.

Lafreniere, meanwhile, was also consistent over the three rounds. He birdied his final two holes to move into a tie for 10th. He had a 70-72-73—215 (+2). Over the tournament, he tallied 12 birdies, which tied for fourth-most in the field.

Both Hunter Swidzinski and Cameron Hardison moved up into the top 25 in the final round, with the two tying for 25th. Swidzinski finished with a 75-72-72—219 (+6) after posting back-to-back 72s to close the event. He had seven birdies in his final two rounds and added an eagle as well.

Hardison, meanwhile, posted back-to-back 71s to climb up 18 spots on the day. He had an eagle and a birdie along with 14 pars in his final round, and he finished with seven birdies at the event. He had a 77-71-71—219 (+6).

Matthew Hartley finished tied for 51st and finished with a 73-76-77—226 (+13).

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I felt like we played pretty well all day," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "The weather honestly wasn't as bad as we anticipated early this morning, so I thought we could have done a better job of finishing up the second round and possibly put some distance between us and the field. It just didn't happen. As we got toward the end of that round and into the final round, everybody knew they'd better strap in and hang on."

"Our goal was to keep the ball in front of us and make clubface to golf ball contact for every shot," Fillman said of the approach to the final round amid tough weather conditions. "The tough part was that holes three through seven were late in our round It's hard to get through those holes unscathed in perfect conditions, let alone the way it was this afternoon. The wind played some tricks with us in that stretch, and it, unfortunately, cost us a few big numbers. William & Mary was with us the entire tournament, so that makes what their team did all the more impressive."

"We've had a solid fall, especially given the turnover in our roster from the past few years," Fillman added. "We'll build on what we've started, work over the offseason to improve some areas that need it and get ourselves ready to go for our spring schedule."
