Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gritty Longwood Falls 2-0 at Old Dominion

Reigning Sun Belt Champs Overcome Tough Lancer Squad

NORFOLK, Va. – In their sixth straight road match, Longwood women's soccer refused to go away against the preseason Sun Belt favorite, Old Dominion.

Unfortunately, ODU (5-2) used a penalty kick to take the lead in the first half before a late second half strike put the match out of reach of the Lancers (0-6-1) in the 2-0 decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Despite being shorthanded and on the road for a sixth straight time, the Lancers refused to lay down throughout the match, doggedly defending and creating against a deep Old Dominion side.

While ODU forced the issue and earned a penalty kick that Rhea Kijowski converted in the 18th minute, the Lancers never backed down.

Instead, Longwood responded and continued to counter and push. The team's best chance came on a quick chance up the field. They found Taylor Hoag over the top, but her shot on a bouncing ball hit the outside of the post.

After halftime, ODU again controlled the tempo, but Longwood found pockets of time and space to attack. Meghan Piazza drew a foul midway through the second half for a free kick from 30 yards out, but her attempt didn't quite dip down enough in time.

Finally, ODU's Katie Lutz polished off a nice cross from Brooke Edwards to effectively ice the match as Longwood was chasing the equalizer.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I'm really proud of our fight and soccer tonight," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "We went toe to toe against the reigning champions of the Sun Belt Conference, and that is no easy task. The results aren't going our way, but it's making us stronger and preparing us for what lies ahead in conference. I'm excited that we now have three home games coming up."

UP NEXT:

Longwood returns home to open a three-match homestand. The Lancers will host Hampton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Longwood Athletics Complex, and the match will air on ESPN+.
