FARMVILLE, Va. - Zoe Tierney ripped a goal in the back of the net on a penalty stroke Friday night with eight seconds left to lift Longwood to a 2-1 win over Davidson. The Lancers' (1-0) captain netted both goals in the team's first match of the season during the heartstopping win in front of more than 1,000 fans who came as a part of The G.A.M.E. XIV.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both sides were scoreless in the first quarter, trading opportunities in the midfield.
The Lancers struck first at the start of the second quarter when Tierney took a shot from the right wing that found its way past the Davidson (1-1) keeper.Â
The Wildcats evened the game in the third quarter when Sib Naaktgeboren scored a goal in the 34th minute. It was Naaktgeboren's first goal of the season for Davidson.Â
Both sides created great scoring chances in the fourth quarter. Longwood had back-to-back-to-back penalty corners denied by Davidson, but the Lancer backline returned the favor with less than five miniutes left on Davidson's chances. Goalkeeper
Santia McLaughlin came up with a pair of huge saves.
Hunter-Paige Johnson drove down the right side with under a minute left, where she earned the Lancer's a corner.
Ireland McDermott took the shot on the corner, and it deflected into the body of a Davidson defender who was on the goal line. A replay review confirmed the play, and Longwood was awarded a penalty stroke.Â
Tierney didn't miss. With eight seconds left, she launched her free shot into the back left corner, as the Lancer crowd exploded.
McLaughlin logged all 60 minutes for the Lancers in the cage and finished with six saves.Â
The Lancer's move to 1-0 and now shift their focus to Sunday's game with American.Â
