Lancers Drop Heartbreaker In Overtime

Lightning Strike Sends Spiders past Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood field hockey went down to the wire against fellow Commonwealth foe Richmond on Sunday afternoon, as regulation wasn't enough for the two teams.

However, Richmond (4-2) struck quickly in overtime to take out Longwood (2-2) 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Luna Prieri continued her strong run of play, racking up her fourth goal of the weekend after scoring three on Friday night.

Prieri struck first off a find from Madison Wiley.

The Lancers would keep that lead into the half after freshman goalie Sophie Mooldijk turned the Spiders away time and time again throughout.

Richmond tied the game in the third courtesy of Clara Larripa.

From there the teams would exchange shots, but neither side cracked the seal in regulation.

The Spiders broke through in the overtime period, when Valen Luna Paratore ripped a goal into the back of the net to win the game.

Mooldijk started her second straight match in goal and was great again, saving six shots for the Lancers.

Longwood ripped seven shots, four of which were on goal during the match.

UP NEXT:
Longwood travels to Central Michigan September 20th to take on the Chippewas in their first conference match. First push is set for 1 p.m.
