EMMITSBURG, Md. — Junior midfielder Mateo Nance scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute as the Longwood men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at Mount St. Mary's in non-conference action at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday.
Nance popped the ball up in the box and put just the right amount of spin with a half volley for it to sneak over the shoulder and behind Mount goalkeeper Julian Marcos (four saves) to tie the match.
Classmate Aaron Asamoah earned an assist on the play, his first of the year. The goal for Madrid, Spain native Nance was the third of his career and first at Longwood, having played the last two seasons at Big South and in-state rival Radford.
Just four minutes later, the Mountaineers' Dominik Tapolsky ran onto a long ball over the top of the defense and was clipped from behind by Joshua Yoder, just as the pair entered the area. Tapolosky went to the ground, earning a penalty for Mount St. Mary's and a caution for Yoder.
As he did on Wednesday at UNC Greensboro, however, Longwood goalkeeper Max Hinke turned aside the spot kick, this time to preserve the draw.
"Happy with the performance from the guys," Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert said. "I thought we created enough chances to win the game, but that is football sometimes. We will take a look at the film learn from our mistakes and continue to move forward."
Hinke posted four saves in the match, following his career-best eight stops against the Spartans. He made a diving one-handed sparkler on a sinking 37th-minute header from Sherwin Chen and later thwarted Abou Cherif in the 72nd.
Mount St. Mary's, though, opened the scoring just after halftime, as Tapolsky spun off his defender and found Mackie Sacarellos on the byline. Graham Dougald got on the end of perfect ball from Sacarellos at the top of the six-yard box, one touching it past Hinke for a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.
Longwood (1-3-2) got the better of the play in a scoreless first half, outshooting Mount St. Mary's (0-4-2), 6-2, overall and putting up six corner kicks to just one for the Mount. The Lancers finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots and led in corners, 7-4. Simao Coelho finished the night with six shots and four on goal.
Next, Longwood opens Big South play at Presbyterian on Sunday, Sept. 22. Kickoff in Clinton, S.C., is 1 p.m., on ESPN+.
