Lancers, Flames Play to 2-2 Draw

All four goals come in 10 in minutes in first half

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood men's soccer team and Liberty combined for four goals in a 10-minute span in the first half and settled for a 2-2 draw in non-conference action at the Longwood Athletics Complex Monday.

'I'm super happy with the performance," said Longwood first-year head coach Paul Gilbert. "I think we always try to look at the performance rather than the result, and [it was a] night and day difference from our last match in terms of the collective and staying true to our principles and how we want to play and so I'm very, very happy with our team and how they approached the match."

For the second consecutive match, Longwood (0-1-1) scored first as senior Ethan Stevenson drove a low shot past Liberty goalkeeper Owen Moore in the 12th minute. Liberty cleared Simao Coelho's free kick as far as Stevenson, who brought the ball down in the penalty area and finished with his left foot for the lead and his fifth career Longwood tally.

"First goal was obviously kind of a set piece because that's where it started and it gets knocked around," Gilbert explained. "Ethan Stevenson, when he's in the box, you always feel like he's going to score and he scored a great goal for us to start us off."

The Flames wasted little time getting the equalizer, scoring just 4:30 later. Luke Eberle beat Longwood goalie Max Henke low after Leo Conneh streaked down the right flank and found Eberle in the box.

The Lancers responded, though, to take retake the lead at 2-1 only 31 seconds later. On the play, Brando Bedolla found Aaron Asamoah at the top of the box and he powered one past Moore low inside the right post.

"The second goal is more indicative of how we want to play football," Gilbert said of Asamoah's first NCAA goal. "Playing through an overload, getting a vertical pass with a set and then an unbelievable finish from Aaron Asamoah. He scored some goals this summer and now he's back to doing the same thing, so super happy for him."

Michael Huss knotted the game once again for Liberty in the 20 minute, following his own rebound to beat Hinke alone the turf.

Liberty (1-0-1) outshot the Lancers in the opening 45 minutes, 7-6, but the Longwood carried the majority of possession.

Neither team could break through for a go-ahead goal in a physical second half.

Liberty played the final two minutes with 10 men after Eberle earned a second yellow card for dissent.

"I thought both teams had some good chances," Gilbert said of the second half. "I thought we had more of the ball, but probably even on chances. You know, at the end, that's all you can ask for is a couple chance and hopefully someone puts it in the back of the net, but for us to not concede, I was super, super happy with that."

The Flames outshot Longwood 13-11 overall for the match, including 4-3 in shots on goal, while the teams each had three corner kicks.

Hinke made two saves and Moore one.

Longwood is back in action Sept. 4 at William & Mary. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
