Lancers Fall in Big South Opener to Gardner-Webb, 5-2

Longwood snaps three-match winning streak

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end Thursday in a 5-2 Big South Conference loss to Gardner-Webb at the Lancer Courts.

"Today's match was certainly a tough one for the team," said Longwood women's coach Carlos Lora. "We did not play our best as a team, but still fought hard on all courts. Credit to the Gardner Webb team as they certainly brought it today against us. Looking forward to seeing how we compete this weekend in two more conference matches."

Feline van Eijkelenburg and Oriana Izarra won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-2, over Katie Watts and Milica Prokic to begin the day, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took the other two doubles matches for the early lead. Emilia Roslund and Emma Shasteen topped Phoebe Mitchell and Karina Rizvanova, 6-3 on court one and Courtney Fyvie and Alizée Poulin defeated Sophia Marchetta and Nina Hederich.

Shasteen began singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 win over van Eijkelenburg at No. 1. Prokic then made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Kashmira Manohar on court six. Poulin followed with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Mitchell at No. 3 before Roslund beat Izarra, 6-3, 6-2, on court two.

Longwood won the final two matches to finish as Rizvanova beat Watts in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 5 and Marchetta defeated Fyvie, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Gardner-Webb improved to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big South while Longwood fell to 4-6 and 0-1.

The Lancers are back in action at UNC Asheville Saturday at 10 a.m.
