Longwood Drops Game Three To South Carolina

Noah Campanelli Clobbers Homer, but Late Innings Fuel Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Longwood jumped out to an early 4-2 lead on Sunday in the series finale at No. 21 South Carolina. Noah Campanelli hit a home run to right field in the top half of the third inning, but South Carolina answered to sweep the Lancers (7-8). Longwood kept it close with six runs in the first four innings, but South Carolina (13-3) pulled away late to win 22-6.

Noah Campanelli paced the Lancers with a two hit day.

TOP LWU PERFORMERS:
Noah Campanelli - 2-4, 1 HR (1), 3 RBI
Blagen Pado - 1-2, 1 3B, 1 R

HOW IT HAPPENED:
South Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through two innings, but the Lancers returned fire in the third inning.

After making a diving grab in center field, Blagen Pado led the inning off with a triple to the wall. Keondre Shelton squeezed home Pado to get Longwood on the board. After and error and walk, Noah Campanelli stepped into the box. He stayed on an outside pitch and drove it the opposite way over the right field wall to give Longwood a 4-2 lead, capping a four run inning.

South Carolina, however, would not go away easily. They scored four of their own in the bottom half of the fourth to regain the lead.

After a walk and a single in the fifth, the Lancers keyed on an error by South Carolina to knot the score at six all. That would be the last time Longwood plated a run the rest of the way.

South Carolina would then retake the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning, and would blown the game open in the sixth thanks to an 11 run outburst that sealed the deal.

NOTABLES:

Noah Campanelli hit his first home run of the year. He is the fifth Lancer to hit a home run this season.
