UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – The Longwood women's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep against Coppin State at the Watkins Tennis Bubble on Thursday.
Coppin State competed with just four players on the day and was only able to play two doubles and two singles matches to decision.
"I was happy to see the effort from the women and really proud of the girls especially Oriana [Izarra] for having pulled out a very mentally tough match for her," Longwood head coach
Carlos Lora said. "It was also great to see all of the girls get behind her to help her in her match."
Izarra and
Feline van Eijkelenburg topped CSU's Emperess Johnson and Kenyange Kaounde, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles.
Karina Rizvanova and
Phoebe Mitchell then defeated Megan Etienne and Alison Azarak on court one to take the double point.
Mitchell dispatched Azarak, 6-1, 6-0, prior to Izarra outlasting Etienne, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5) to take the match.
The Lancers No. 3 doubles pair of
Alexis Broderick and
Sophia Marchetta won by default, as did Rizvanova at No. 3 singles, Broderick at No. singles,
Kashmira Manohar at No. 5 singles and
Mahika Gupta at No. 6 singles.
Longwood moves to 1-4 on the season win the win.
The Lancers are back on the court Saturday at 11 a.m., hosting UNCW.
