HAMPTON, Va. – The Longwood women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Hampton in non-conference action at Neilson-Screen Stadium on Wednesday.
The Lancers opened the match with a sweep of doubles.
Kashmira Manohar and
Sophia Marchetta topped Lucia Jorrin Fernandez and Meiri Okuwaki, 6-2 at No. 3 to start before
Phoebe Mitchell and
Karina Rizvanova defeated Mio Kozaki and Sofia Sokolva, 6-4, on No. 1 and
Feline van Eijkelenburg and
Oriana Izarra beat Masa Mitic and Diana Stradubtseva, 6-4 at No. 2.
Hampton won five of the six singles matches to take the dual. Stradubtseva bested Mitchell, 6-1, 6-2, to tie the match at 1-1 prior to Marchetta beating Okuwaki, 0-6, 6-0, 6-1 to give Longwood the lead again. Kozaki tied it at 2-2 for Hampton with a No. 1 singles win over van Eijkelenburg in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Jorrin Fernandez then beat Manohar, 6-4, 6-2 Sokolova then beat Rizvanova in three sets at No. 5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Mitic beat
Alexis Broderick , 7-5, 6-3, on court six to clinch the match.
The Pirates move to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Longwood falls to 1-5 with the loss.
The Lancers are back in action Thursday, Feb. 22 at home against Chowan at 3:30 p.m.
