WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Longwood women's tennis team fell, 7-0 to William & Mary at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center Saturday.
The Tribe, playing its spring season opener, took the doubles point by winning on courts three and one, respectively. First, Kensie Cricchio and Mila Mejic defeated
Nina Hederich and
Sophia Marchetta, 6-2, on three. Then, Yu Chen and Emma Fernald topped
Karina Rizvanova and
Feline van Eijkelenburg, 6-2, on one.
"Today's match started out a bit tough for us," said Longwood head coach
Carlos Lora. "In the doubles point, we started off very slow and missing very early in the points. We picked it up though level-wise and energy-wise when we started the singles and had several close matches where we had a few chances to maybe run away with some of those matches. Looking forward to this week where we go to Coppin State and have our home opener against UNCW."
Alexis Broderick lost to Yaelle Vaissaud, 6-0, 6-1, on court six to begin singles action. William & Mary went up, 3-0, with Chen's 6-0, 6-0 win over
Oriana Izarra at No. 2.
Kashmira Manohar dropped her match with Francesca Davis, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5, while William & Mary made it 5-0 with Hedda Gurholt's 6-3, 6-2 win against van Eijkelenburg on No. 1.
Ine Stange won on court three over Marchetta, 6-2, 7-5.
