Lancers Dismantle Hood, 102-21, for Homecoming Win

Winners of two-of-three, Longwood off to best start since 2013-14

FARMVILLE, Va. — Sophomore Otaifo Esenabhalu posted her third career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench as the Longwood women's basketball team hit triple digits for the second time in as many seasons, rolling to a 102-21 homecoming victory over Hood at the Joan Perry Brock Center on Sunday.

Twelve of the 13 Lancers found the scoring column and four finished in double figures as Longwood shot 48 percent from the field and knocked down nine 3-pointers. The Lancers limited the Blazers to single digits in all four quarters, just nine made field goals, 18.4 percent from the floor and seven free-throw attempts. Hood committed 40 turnovers leading to 43 Longwood points.

Longwood last scored 100 against Regent on Jan. 27, 2024 in a 103-52 home win.

With Sunday's victory, the Lancers improved to 2-1 to start the season for the first time since 2013-14. The Lancers beat William & Mary, 59-52, and Utah Valley, 59-57, on Nov. 11 and 16, respectively, at home as part of the stretch.

Esenabhalu shot 4-for-6 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, grabbing eight rebounds on the offensive glass, on a day the Lancers outmuscled Hood for a 61-26 advantage on the boards.

"We wanted to set the tone that we were going to be the aggressive team on both ends of the floor and so I thought we did that," Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery said. "I was really impressed with Otaifo tonight — came in off the bench, got some big rebounds, her first double-double of the season.

"And I thought our bench — it was nice to be able to get some players into the game who hadn't seen minutes earlier this year — and I thought they executed well."

Longwood enjoyed a 60-6 edge in bench scoring with 14 and 11 of those coming from freshman Olivia Bowes and junior Jaci Bolden, respectively. Bowes added eight rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block in just 14 minutes, while Bolden had four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

"Liv Bowes, you know, came in, hit some big shots for us," said Lang-Montgomery.  And so, that was really impressive, as well."

"I hope that it gives our bench some confidence that if they continue to work and practice, that they're going to get some time on the floor, that they'll be able to come in spot minutes or be igniters off the bench to help our team keep the momentum going."

Longwood also shared the ball well with 26 assists on its 39 made baskets, the most since dishing 27 against Regent. Lili Booker had a game- and career-high five assists, while sophomore Frances Ulysse added four to go with eight points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Senior Malea Brown was the first Longwood player in double figures on the day, finishing with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Lancers shook off a sluggish start to lead 22-5 after the first quarter, were up, 59-10, at the break and 83-16 after three.

Longwood hits the road Wednesday, playing at American as part of a three-game road trip. Game time in Washington, D.C., is 7 p.m., at Bender Arena, and will be streamed on ESPN+.

"We go to American on Wednesday, a team that we fought and battled with last season," said Lang-Montgomery. "So, I'm excited to see how much growth we've had from one year to the next. And kind of peaking, not really turning the page, but we've got to get ready for a very good Georgia Southern and Queens team, as well. My hope is that we can take the aggressiveness that we've had at home and the determination that we've had on the glass at Norfolk … with us this next week."
